NIGERIA: THE daughter of the late famous musicologist, Dayo Dedeke, who initiated the carol service in Ogun State, has lamented the copyright infringement on the musical work of her father.

Mrs. Yemi Dedeke-Olanrewaju, a retired Permanent Secretary in Ogun State, alleged that one Ranti Ihimoyan had copyrighted her dad’s Yoruba song titled “Iwe Kiko.”

According to her, the alleged man who tagged the copyrighted work ‘folk song’ did so without giving an iota of credit to her late father, who was once a Music Director and Master of Choristers in carol services of the defunct Western Region.

She told GatewayMail: “My father, Dayo Dedeke, was a renowned musicologist who was born on the 2nd of December, 1921 in Abeokuta.  He was a complete artist/artiste.”

Dedeke-Olanrewaju, who was once a Director of Arts and Culture in the Gateway State, further said that by the action, the producer had ran in conflict with the copyright law.

She explained that her late father, who composed the song,”Ise Ya”, 41 years ago‎ before its adoption by Ogun State as its anthem, composed “Iwe Kiko” in 1953 to mark the inauguration of the farmers’ cooperative society in the old Western Region.

The retired Permanent Secretary claimed that Ihimoyan in conjunction with Cobhams Asuqo reproduced her late dad’s song without deeming it proper to give credit to the original producer of the work.

“No credit whatsoever is given to the composer and the work is tagged folk song by Ranti just because she is too lazy to do proper research,” Dedeke-Olanrewaju lamented.

“I still wonder why anyone will steal another person’s work and make money from another person’s sweat,” she lamented, adding: “Now Etisalat is using it as a ring back tune.”

GatewayMail, however, observed that the song was on page 56 of the deceased’s book titled “Ma gbagbe”, which was published 54 years ago by London Oxford University Press.
