Varsity lecturer emerges new Olota of Ota

NIGERIA: A SENIOR lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication at the Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State, Prince (Dr.) ‘Yemi Obalanlege, has been selected as the new Olota of Ota.

The Oba-elect, after necessary approval by the government of Senator Ibikunle Amosun, will succeed the late Oba Moshood Alani Adetoro Oyede, Arolagbade III, the Olota of Ota, who died at the age of 71 in 2016.

The new traditional ruler of the most industrialized community in Ogun State, who is a member of popular social media platform, Penpushing, was elected last Tuesday by five kingmakers led by the Ekerin of Ota, Chief Bamgboye Osunlabu, in an open ballot held at the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Secretariat, Ota.

The Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Adewale Dada, supervised the election.

The Oba-elect, who once indicated interest to contest for the Ogun West Senatorial District seat on the platform of All Progressive Congress (APC) in 2015, garnered all the five votes to defeat Prince Gbolagade Akinboyede, Barrister Abiodun Akinboyede and Barrister Oluwatoyin Adeyanju, who were shortlisted from the 22 aspirants from Ijemo-Isholoshi Ruling House, who aspired to succeed Oba Oyede.

Prince Obalanlege, who will be the 13th Olota of Ota, was born on August 28, 1966 to the late Prince Hassan Taiwo Obalanlege of Ijemo Compound and Mrs. Mutiat Afolake Obalanlege (nee Anjorin) of Isoloshi Compound, Ota.

The UK certified journalist, who is a member of the National Union of Journalists in United Kingdom and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy, UK, had lectured at the University of East London, England, University of Lincoln, England before he moved to the School of Post Graduate Studies, Department of Mass Communication at Crescent University, Abeokuta where he was until his appointment.
