NIGERIA: THE ‎Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has given warning to the management of Leadership newspapers over its refusal to pay journalists working in the organisation.

The NUJ insisted that the time has come for the management to pay the workers failure of which unpleasant action shall be taken by the union to show the seriousness in its demand.

The union said in its letter addressed to the Publisher of Leadership newspaper that the eight months pay being owed the journalists must be paid without further delay.

“We refer to our letter of demand dated August 17, 2017, ref: NUJ/LN/1/8/17 addressed to the Group Managing Director, Leadership Newspapers, in which we requested for the immediate payment of Salary arrears of NUJ members that stood in excess of 8 months,” the NUJ said in the letter signed by its National Secretary, Shuaibu Usman Leman.

The union stated that the latest letter was a follow-up to the earlier one written on August 17 on the same matter, but which the management of the newspaper pretended not to have seen, particularly with no response.

“It is therefore obvious as suspected all this while that payment of staff salaries has never been an issue of priority to your organization,” the union said.

“Sir, you will do well to direct the immediate payment of all the arrears of emoluments as per our letter of demand,” it further said, adding: “Also take note that your organization may not have the benefit of another notification on this issue.”
